Don't Stop Believing - Decompiled

A very good friend complained (bitterly) that the Journey song "Don't Stop Believin'" is a terrible song that is grossly overrated.  One of his main complaints was that the song doesn't mean anything.  It occurred to me that he must not like it because he does not understand it.  To that end, I took the liberty of explaining lyrics...

Just a small town girl, livin' in a lonely world  /  Pretty girl wants to get off the farm
She took the midnight train goin' anywhere  /  Actually it was a Greyhound to L.A.
Just a city boy, born and raised in south Detroit  / Kid gets involved in gangs because he can't face up to his latent homosexuality
He took the midnight train goin' anywhere  / Oops, gangs figure out he's queer.  Gotta make a run for it.

A singer in a smokey room  /  Rock star wanna be hasn't realized he's never going to make it big
A smell of wine and cheap perfume   /   It's a barfly hangout.  Think Lola from the final stanzas of Copa Cabana
For a smile they can share the night   /  A smile, or 10 bucks to score
It goes on and on and on and on   /   Different night, different girl.

Strangers waiting, up and down the boulevard   /  Cruising prostitutes
Their shadows searching in the night   /   Skanky prostitutes
Streetlights people, living just to find emotion   /  And vampires
Hiding, somewhere in the night.   /  Skanky vampires

Working hard to get my fill,   /   Thinks he has a big penis.
Everybody wants a thrill   /  Yeah, every girl wants some of this action.
Payin' anything to roll the dice,   /  Drug reference
Just one more time    /   In the ass
Some will win, some will lose   /  Some will hook up with a pretty girl, others will get the hags
Some were born to sing the blues   /   Of course the nerds strike out completely
Oh, the movie never ends   /   Remember the girl on the Greyhound?  She's doing B-level porn now.
It goes on and on and on and on   /   You know, those scenes you don't even want to think about

(Chorus)

Don't stop believin'   /   Hey everybody, come to LA the land of golden opportunity
Hold on to the feelin'   /   Working as a waitress in a 24 hour diner is not that different from being a big star
Streetlights people   /  The vampire prostitutes are back

Don't stop believin'   /  The gay kid from Detroit.  He's a busboy at an old folks home
Hold on   /  Turns out he has a hard-on for old men
Streetlight people   /   And vampires

Don't stop believin'  /  More of the same
Hold on to the feelin'  /  More of the same
Streetlights people  /    Hey, does anybody know Beugg?
